Connecting Cultures
Connecting Cultures is the Liverpool based Refugee Artists Collective. Born in March 2006, it is constantly expanding and it’s always interested in hearing from artists or arts practitioners from the refugee and asylum seeker communities in Liverpool.
Their latest project, funded by the Home Office and Merseyside Refugee Support Network, celebrated Refugee Week 2006 with an exhibition and a series of performances and events in various venues around the city and the North West.
Under the title ‘The Wonders of Connecting Cultures’, artists from Algeria, Kosovo, Kurdistan, Jamaica, Liberia, Pakistan, Turkey, Russia, Somalia and Tibet exhibited their artwork at the 52, Roscoe Street Gallery.
The BBC Big Screen in Clayton Square, Liverpool City Centre also screened a showcase of the group and their work over a two-week period in July ’06.
The collective comprises of creative practitioners in areas such as dance, poetry, music, crochet, film and painting. For the majority of participants, Connecting Cultures has been their first opportunity to showcase their talent in the UK.
And more to come…
In addition, there are plans for more projects, exhibitions and events for the autumn/winter ‘06-‘07 season and beyond.
Keep an eye on this exciting collective!
