Mission
The Somali Umbrella Group’s (SUG) main purpose is to provide, maintain and enhance vital services to the whole of the Somali Community within Merseyside, combined with highlighting other Somali interests in the City. Subsequently, it looks to establish itself as a beacon and as an example for the other racial minority and community based organisations both regionally, exemplifying best practice, innovation and initiative.
Objectives
- To increase the visibility of the Somalis in Merseyside
- To attract more resources to the community in terms of the people, money and a building
- To break the stereotype image of Somalis so that attitudes may change while the cultural identity is retained
- To improve access to information in the Somali language both written and verbal
- To help people get jobs that inspire them
- To provide better facilities for all sections of the community including:
- Children
- Young Women
- Young Men
- Elderly Women
- Elderly Men
- Housebound and people in residential care
- To improve educational attainment
- To improve language skills within the community
SUG aims to be a unifying force for the Somali community in general and encourage all local Somali community organisations to work together. SUG will also partner and involve other Somali community groups to further develop and promote trust, co-operation and joint working. History
SUG was established in the light of the Bishop of Liverpool’s report (March 2000). Its main objectives were to act as an enabler and unifier of the fractions that existed within the Somali community. This was mainly due to the fact that all fractions of the Somali Community suffered the same common disadvantages, barriers and isolation. Therefore the SUG was not to become another fraction but a unifier, it was established to become an inclusive body for all fractions not an exclusive fraction within itself.
